Rescue Training with the Fire Department
On October 5 and 6, our terminal, in collaboration with the S.A.F. group (speleological, alpine and fluvial rescue) of the Fire Department’s provincial headquarters performed a series of exercises in rescue training.
More specifically, they simulated the retrieval of a quay crane operator who wouldn’t be able to leave their position on their own. Considering that the crane cab stands at 50 meters above sea level, it’s easy to understand to what extent this sort of operation must be approached delicately. The rescuers harnessed the operator and brought him down by a system of cables to land safely first on the quay and then on the Svezia tugboat, which participated in the training exercises, thanks to the availability of the Rimorchiatori Riuniti (United Tugboats Association).
Previously, Terminal Management and the Fire Department headquarters worked together to outfit all twelve quay cranes with the tools and equipment necessary for the rescue missions that were demonstrated during the training exercise. This includes a basket for lifting and lowering people used for high-altitude rescues.
The equipment as well as the training exercises not only reduce rescue times, but also represent the Italian excellence of the collaboration between the private port company and the local firefighters.
