The PSA Mittelmeerzug Continues to Guarantee the Direct Rail Connection Between Basel and the Port of Genoa
End of ’18, PSA installed the first-ever direct rail connection between Genoa and Basel, the ‘Mittelmeerzug’ (MMZ). This historical link for intermodal transport allows cargo owners in Switzerland, Austria and Central-Europe to connect directly to the Port of Genoa. For these customers, the ‘Mittelmeerzug’ reduces the transit time of their containers with at least seven days (sailing time required to reach the North-European ports) and they avoid the unpredictability of the barge connection southwards.
Notwithstanding the COVID-19 difficulties, the Southern European Ports are providing continuous operations and, despite the dramatic rail accident on the Swiss Rail Network between Basel and Freiburg last week, the PSA train connecting Central Europe to Genoa Port is running as scheduled.
The train has a length of 440m and capacity of 1,250 tons. The ‘Mittelmeerzug’ (MMZ) runs at 3 roundtrips per week between Genoa and Basel and on all rotations, it is possible to book high-cube containers as well as shipments containing ADR goods.
The service leaves PSA Genoa Pra, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 04:30 sharp. Pick-up in Basel is possible starting at 07:00 the next day. Cargo closing is set 24 hours before departure. From Basel, departures are every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 22:30, with cargo closing at 15:00 and arriving at PSA Genoa Pra at 12:30 the following day.
