PSA VENICE- VECON TERMINAL CUTS CO2 WITH BIOFUEL: THE PORT OF VENICE PIONEERING SUSTAINABILITY WITH HVO AND 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY
A major step toward the green goal of “zero emissions” has been unveiled by the PSA Venice-Vecon container terminal, which has announced the implementation of a pioneering sustainability strategy with the adoption of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and the use of 100% renewable energy-a transformation that not only reduces environmental impact but also sets a new standard for the port sector.
As of February 1st, PSA Venice-Vecon terminal has replaced traditional diesel with HVO biofuel to power yard equipment, including reach stackers, forklifts, and fifth wheels: this high-quality biofuel is produced from 100 percent renewable raw materials such as vegetable waste, residues, oils, and wastes from processing plant products or crops that do not compete with the food chain.
The environmental benefit is twofold: the transition to HVO required no changes to port equipment and demonstrates a real commitment to a circular economy and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.
GHG emissions have been assessed using a well-to-wheel approach, which considers the entire life cycle of the fuel, from production to use: the comparison of emissions according to the standards of Directive 2018/2001/EC highlights how the HVO used by PSA Venice -Vecon boasts an 88.7% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional diesel fuel; in addition, the new E-RTG electric cranes ordered in 2024 are scheduled for delivery in early 2026, and will take over from the last two RTGs still powered by traditional diesel and being replaced.
Along with the introduction of HVO, as of December 2024, the PSA Venice - Vecon terminal has activated the supply of 100% green energy from wind renewable sources, with the issuance of GO certificates and a 100 percent reduction in CO2 emissions from energy consumption, materializing a tangible commitment to environmental sustainability, which goes beyond the powering of port facilities.
“These results show that it is possible to combine operational efficiency with environmental sustainability - stressed Daniele Marchiori, General Manager of PSA Venice-Vecon - our container terminal stands as a model sa follow for the port and logistics sector, aiming to inspire other industrial realities to adopt similar practices to reduce emissions and demonstrating that environmental commitment is not only feasible but can also be an integral part of a company's business model without compromising its operational performance.”
“Seeking a possible balance between ports and the environment is a goal we have undertaken from the very beginning - says Fulvio Lino Di Blasio, President of North Adriatic Sea Port System Authority - A goal that is also declined through the implementation of the new strategy of liberalization of the energy market for terminal operators, intervening on the power grid and the turnarounds of the Electricity Distribution Points (PoDs). Thanks to an investment of about 2.5 M€ for the refurbishment and adaptation of power lines and transformer substations, our Authority has finally enabled terminal operators to acquire energy on the free market, on the one hand favoring efficiency on one of the relevant cost factors for the port and on the other hand acting as a driver for the use of green energy in the port.”
